  • New gem system is enough to drop the app imo

    I’ll start by saying I’ve been a monthly subscriber for almost four years continuously. This allows you to read on Manta. That’s fine, though there are other apps that are free, it’s only a few $ so no biggie. Manta does allow you to read the first few episodes free without a subscription too. Recently, Manta rolled out their gem system so now you have to be subscribed which will gain you access to the first few episodes of certain titles AND purchase gems to be able to access more of those episodes. So now you’re basically having to pay for what used to be free access to the first few episodes and now pay even more for the rest. Bundles start at $2.49 for 20 gems and episodes cost about 4 each so roughly $.60 an episode which doesn’t seem like much but certainly adds up and we all know gem prices will eventually go up and up. Not all titles require gems but eventually, I believe we’ll see a lot more of them go this way. It’s a sad attempt to get spenders to pay even more money. I miss when apps weren’t like this. I already pay monthly but that’s not enough apparently.

  • Gems and On Hiatus

    The graphics and story lines can’t be blamed…but many times the output is disrupted with indefinite “On Hiatus” notifications, sudden “Break Every X Episodes,” and follow up seasons that never come. Still, it was a reasonable monthly fee with plenty of content. Then Gems came along and, yep, have to buy to read additional episodes. That was the sword that killed.

    Not only have they Introduced a gem system in top of the subscription, but now most new stories can only be read with gems. I wouldn’t get this app, just a waste of money now. Who would want to pay about $60 to read one story? Do not recommend!

    Overall just disappointed in this app, it was my go to app. Loved their stories, they made me fall in love with webcomics but I was extremely disappointed knowing I pay every month for this app for about two years now. Only for them to now charge gems to read single episodes, honestly getting tired of companies doing this, it’s exhausting. I was willing to pay for the novels however for each episode is a bit much, I purposely kept away from other webcomic apps for this reason. <\3 if you can find another app that doesn’t charge please stay there if not this app does have great novels/webcomics but it’s just another cash grab.

    I love Manta and have been a user for years now! I am subscribed to their monthly reader so I dont have to unlock episodes and its so convenient and I truly hope they never change! Webtoon used to be amazing until they got money hungry :/

  • WAS worth it until gems

    I always paid $3.99/month to get full access. Now they have gems.. so now there are even more restrictions and paywalls and it’s hardly different from any of the other comic apps :( Why would I pay monthly just to also have a bunch of series that require paid gems to read?? It shouldn’t be called “unlimited” anymore. I would rather have they just increased the price of the subscription if they needed more money. Edit; Dear devs, I suggest adding an additional tier to the subscription rather than gems. For example, the current Manta Unlimited is $3.99/month, and you could add another tier to it called Manta Unlimited+ for like $12.99/mo for the newly added expanded library.

  • Charging a subscription AND making you buy gems????

    This is really ridiculous, I loved manta because for a long time you pay for a subscription to read all the comics you want, and now on top of charging for the subscription, they’re making you buy gems to unlock more chapters. This is an awful money grab and I will be cancelling my subscription and deleting the app. Edit for developer response: there are stories now that you CANNOT read without buying gems. It defeats the purpose of the unlimited subscription, which is supposed to be UNLIMITED. Not only this, but they have taken old stories that have existed on the app for a while and LOCKED THEM behind gems! Actively TAKING AWAY stories you can read with your subscription. Saying you are “offering us more ways to enjoy the content” is a blatant lie. You had an incredibly loyal customer base and you are spitting in their faces.

    I've been enjoying the app for a while now, but the recent introduction of the Gem system is frustrating. Despite already paying for a monthly subscription, I’m now being asked to purchase extra Gems for certain stories. It feels like a money grab, and it’s unfair that even after subscribing, I can’t access everything without making additional purchases.

    I love this app, the stories are good and there’s always something new to read, however, they just started this thing where you have to buy gems in addition to the subscription you pay in order to have access to certain comics, actually some of the comics they are adding gems to read are ones that I have read in the past without having to buy gems for them. I’m kinda upset this is happening and I’m worried that the only way to get comics in the future on manta will be with this gem buying in addition to the subscription, the subscription is p cheap like $12/yr but I’m already paying a subscription service now I have to buy gems on top of that for access to comics that a) I’ve already read for b) would want to read :/ I don’t like where the app is heading and I hope I’m wrong cuz I really really love this comic app 😭😭 Edit: ok they explained everything in a letter to subscribers! Only certain titles are pay per episode since they are not able to have them up under contract as most comic teams tend to prefer that model. So in order to keep those accesible and provide more titles, they are adding this model. They still have titles under subscription that are available to subscribers so I’m happy about that 😮‍💨 and they want to add options for subscribers to be awarded gems and stuff so that’ll be fun! Maybe they can do an interactive quiz thing about some of the comics to earn gems or something, I can’t wait to see what they have in the works! Thank you Team Manta!! ❤️❤️❤️

  • Subscription and now gems…

    So this use to be my favorite app for reading manga because it’s just a subscription. But now a bunch of the stories you have to have gems for? If I have an “unlimited monthly subscription” that I pay for, I should not have to ALSO buy gems to read stories. If I have to buy all these stories with gems on top of paying my monthly subscription, then I’m gonna cancel and delete this app forever because that is just super unfair. Get rid of the stupid gems and keep the subscription thing.
